Source Taxonomy Values

This page lists the values in the three-part taxonomy we use to organize the sources from which we aggregate stories. You can use these values to create parameters that filter any request to our Stories Query Resource by the topic of their content ("Vertical"), the medium of their content ("Format"), or the type of author who publishes them ("Author Type").

Vertical

The following values can be provided in an Include or Exclude Vertical parameter on a request to the Stories Query Resource to refine story results by the topic of the feed from which they were found:

  1. news: Returns stories from feeds categorized as "general news" and from feeds with the more specific categorizations below:
    1. national
    2. local
    3. world
    4. crime
    5. politics-and-political-analysis
    6. opinion
  2. lifestyle: Returns stories from feeds categorized as "general lifestyle" and from feeds with the more specific categorizations below:
    1. activism
    2. arts-and-entertainment
    3. crafts
    4. fashion
    5. food-and-restaurants
    6. nightlife
    7. shopping
    8. real-estate
    9. health
    10. travel
    11. recreation
    12. parenting-family-and-children
    13. personal
    14. religion
    15. community
  3. education: Returns stories from feeds categorized as "general education" and from feeds with the more specific categorizations below:
    1. colleges-and-universities
    2. high-schools
    3. libraries
  4. business: Returns stories from feeds categorized as "general business" and from feeds with the more specific categorizations below:
    1. finance
    2. marketing
    3. small-business
    4. advertising
    5. business-promotion
  5. science-and-technology
  6. sports

Format

The following values can be provided in an Include or Exclude Format parameter on a request to the Stories Query Resource to refine story results by the medium of the feed from which they were found:

  1. stories: Returns stories from feeds categorized as "general stories" and from feeds with the more specific categorizations below:
    1. blog-posts (returns stories from sites that identify themselves as blogs)
    2. news-articles (returns stories from sites that identify themselves as publishing news)
    3. press-releases
  2. reviews-and-ratings (returns reviews of restaurants, bars, and venues)
  3. event-listings

Author Type

The following values can be provided in an Include or Exclude Author Type parameter on a request to the Stories Query Resource to refine story results by our categorization of the publisher of the feed from which they were found. Note that this will only affect the stories in your results from publishers besides Patch:

  1. mainstream-media (returns stories published by mainstream news sites, such as CNN, New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal)
  2. independent-new-media (returns stories published by new media sites, such as The Huffington Post and Gothamist)
  3. sharing-and-community-sites (returns stories published on sites that have multiple contributors, such as Yelp and Chowhound)
  4. businesses-and-organizations: Returns stories from feeds categorized as "businesses and organizations" and from feeds with the more specific categorizations below.
    1. corporations
    2. small-businesses
    3. real-estate-agents-and-brokers
    4. non-profit-and-not-for-profit-organizations
    5. sports-teams
    6. religious-institutions
    7. political-parties
  5. individuals: Returns stories from feeds categorized as being published by "individuals" and from feeds with the more specific categorizations below.
    1. general (returns stories published by general bloggers with no affiliation to a larger organization)
    2. celebrities
  6. educational-institutions: Returns stories from feeds categorized as being published by "educational institutions" and from feeds with the more specific categorizations below.
    1. colleges-and-universities
    2. high-schools
    3. libraries
  7. government (returns stories published by governmental organizations or politicians)
